Dahlia's have been around for over 200 years. These beautiful, whirling flowers were first discovered in Mexico and then brought to Spain. It's fitting that my showy friend is found lounging upon Miro's Posters. Miró created wonderful, energetic works that I enjoy very much. They have a childlike appeal to me, but one painting in particular holds a revolutionary energy, May 1968. Here, in the US, we recognize that 1968 was a tumultuous time of change. The Civil Rights Act was passed, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated and protest against the Vietnam War were in full swing. France, and much of Europe, were experiencing a similar type of revolution. Miró captured it beautifully in his painting, which I offer below my photograph. Could that orange bloom in the upper corner be a beloved dahlia, too?
